GAME COUNTER OR ”NORFOLK LIAR”
During the 1820’s, a few larger estates introduced driven game shooting to the sporting world. Until then game shooting had been walked-up shooting over pointing dogs. A walked-up day was modest in numbers, but numbers grew as driven shooting was slowly introduced. During the same period more birds were reared and released into the woods, which also allowed for higher numbers, usually referred to as the “bag”.
In the 1840’s, the double barreled breech loading shotgun was invented, which made game shooting more competitive and with an increase of reared and released birds, bags became larger, quite a bit larger actually. With larger bags, the competitive element in game shooting became a thing, and the sportsmen wanted to keep score of the number of game they delivered. This would all result in the development of the Game Counter. From the second half of the 19th century several of the well-known British gun manufacturers started to manufacture these pocket size game counters. Sometime between WW2 and the early 1970’s, further development and manufacturing of game counters was seized, only very few companies continued to make these in a small scale. Apparently, some sportsmen had an over optimistic idea of how many birds they actually shot, or they deliberately exaggerated the numbers, and made sure it was to be seen on the dials of their Game counter! These sportsmen gave it the nickname “Norfolk Liar”.
Today, 170 years later, most shooting afficionados refer to this instrument as a Norfolk Liar, and not a game counter. We believe it was nicknamed a Norfolk Liar simply because of the large shooting estates in Norfolk, and definitely not as a reference to the fine Norfolk sportsmen. As a tribute to the history of driven shooting, fine British gun manufacturing and the Norfolk Liar, we decided to develop a new and improved game counter, or Laksen Sporting Liar if you will. Our game counter is the latest product from of our design collab with designer and passionate sportsman, Henrik Bønnelycke, which also include shooting glasses and watches. Visit www.bonnelycke.com to learn more about Henrik’s work. We have used solid brass, chromed aluminum and stainless steel Torx screws. Every dial counts to 60, the hands can be handled with or without gloves, it clicks precisely, and to protect gun, gunstock, hands and fingers, it’s designed without any sharp edges. The leather strap is 750 mm folded, long enough to carry it around your neck, yet stowed away in your cartridge pockets. The production facility itself, is also a piece of fascinating history and craftmanship. A small dedicated company in the northern part of Denmark, specializing in fine, precise and complex engineering and manufacturing, owned and run by true craftsmen.
The Game Counter is in other words designed, engineered and manufactured in Denmark
