A house with exceptional longevity, Barbour is an emblematic brand of a resolutely English and country style and art of living. It was created by John Barbour in 1894 who opened a first shop "John Barbour & Sons" at 5 Market Place in South Shields in England, in the North East of England. In 1908, Barbour released the first catalog by mail. Already at the time, 75% of its orders came from abroad with countries such as Chile, South Africa, or Hong Kong. An already global market. The business is growing. John Barbour's two sons, Jack and Duncan, succeed their father. When World War II breaks out, Duncan will be called upon to fight. It is his wife Nancy, who will run the company in his absence. Barbour will play an active role during this war, notably by equipping submariners with the Ursula suit. In 1957, after being a retailer, Barbour became a manufacturer and distributor. The brand sets up its factories on the edge of South Shields. On April 1, 1974, Barbour received the "Royal Warrants of Appointment" from the Duke of Edinburgh. A most prestigious recognition. This approval was followed by that of the Queen in 1982 and that of the Prince of Wales in 1987. It is today the only brand to have these three distinctions at the same time. In 1980, the Bedale jacket was released, and its feminine equivalent, the Beadnell, which would become an iconic model of the brand like the Beaufort in 1987, models that you will of course find on our site. These jackets are still made in South Shields. Little anecdote, the tartan fabric of the lining is that of the Barbour family.
Today, Barbour is still run by Margaret Barbour. His daughter Helen, representing the fifth generation, serves as vice-president. The brand is present in more than 40 countries. Through its history, its know-how, its aesthetics, Barbour embodies all the qualities that we appreciate at Tweedchasse. On our site, you will find the mythical oiled Bedale and Beaufort jackets, shirts, caps, shoes, vests and quilted jackets… Thanks to TweedChasse you have the possibility of having the entire Barbour wardrobe at home in one click!
